SIFNOS ISLAND, CYCLADES – GREECE
RESIDENCE IN VATHI, SIFNOS ISLAND – GREECE
The plot is located outside the municipal zoning area of Sifnos Island, in Vathi. The building is set on a steep slope with unobstructed views of the bay and the sea. The entrance is at the highest point of the plot, which is formed in levels – terraces with rubble stone walls. The building is developed on two levels and follows the traditional morphological elements of the area.
On the upper level, the common areas of the house are located with access to differently oriented courtyards of the surrounding area, in order to achieve protection from the sun and the wind during the day. A straight staircase leads to the lower level, where three en-suite bedrooms are arranged. Everything has direct access to the courtyard. In addition, on this level, a fourth space is created with a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, which has the option of a private entrance from the yard, so it can operate independently to the house. This space is located in the same volume as the upper level, which is plastered and has large openings, in order to achieve the abundant lighting of the spaces in the living areas.
A second ground level volume that consists of the other bedrooms, penetrates the first. It is made of local stone and its roof is planted resulting to its integration with the terrain. Here, the openings are smaller to ensure the bedrooms’ tranquility and privacy. This house was designed with a provision for tourist exploitation.
